Editor's Note: Revere High School student Halie Nitzsche is one of nearly 50 students in Ohio to travel throughout Europe this summer as a part of the People to People Student Ambassador organization.
The group left Ohio on June 22 and will return July 10. In today’s update, Halie recalls visits to the Eiffel Tower and Louvre to see some of the most famous sights in France. She also adds some interesting accounts about getting lost -- again, and a run in with some sticky-fingered natives.
Visit Bath.Ohio.com for the next two and a half weeks to read Halie’s first-hand account during her time in France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy.
Take a look at Days 8 here:
Day 8~ We got to sleep in at our home stay until 8:30 a.m. Barbara and her mom, Monica, prepared breakfast for us. It was bread with butter made by their neighbor and jelly made from Monica. We also had a really good cereal but the name was in German and I don't remember it. It was chocolate with oatmeal-like flakes in it.
We had to leave at 9:30 to go to the bus station because Barbara had to practice with her friend for a violin concert on Wednesday. Barbara (Babsi) goes to a music high school and plays the violin really well. We had to go on one bus that took us down the mountain, another that took us to the train stop, but that train was broken so we took another bus to a different train stop and got on the train. We rode the train for about an hour then got off to go on another bus that would take us to her school. It took us two hours to get there, but was really fun because I have never really rode a bus or train other than in Cuyahoga Falls and the subway in New York, I think.
We listened to them practice for an hour and then got back on the bus to go to a stage in a lake. It was raining the whole day and we kept opening and closing our umbrellas. When we got on another train, we met up with 10 other people from our People to People travel group.
We walked around the stage, which was amazing and was even used in a James Bond film. Then we walked into town to get lunch. We ate at a little restaurant called ‘Döner Kebab’ to have a weird sandwich that was absolutely amazing! It had pork, lettuce, tomatoes, cabbage and ranch dressing stuffed into a bread pocket-like thing.
After lunch, we went to a museum about the history of the town. We met up with a friend of Babsi's and he was the host for Bryan, another People to People member. We walked around and hung out in a black box that overlooked the lake.
After that, we walked with her friend and Bryan back to the stage so they could see it and headed back to a bus that would take us to the train station.
We got on the train and found Katie, another People to People member. We were so tired and almost fell asleep. Finally, we got off that train and Monica picked us up so we didn't have to wait 30 minutes for the next bus to go up the mountain. The ride up was so scary. We kept thinking we were going to fall off the mountain.
When we got home, dinner was ready. It was a tofu curry with rice that was pretty decent. We finished the game we played yesterday and then had a lot of ice cream because I was craving it all day long. After that, we went upstairs to a loft-like area to watch a British guy do stunts on television before we all went to bed.
