BATH TWP. - More than 500 American Civil War re-enactors, including Union and Confederate soldiers, civilians, cavalry and merchants, will be at Hale Farm & Village on Friday and Saturday for Western Reserve Historical Society’s annual event.
Guests can meet soldiers and civilians, hear the sounds of battle, smell the gunpowder, shake hands with “President Lincoln” and shop for a hoopskirt during the weekend festivities.
“The Civil War Reenactment at Hale Farm & Village is Ohio’s largest reenactment in 2012,” said Colonel Bob Minton, Army of the Ohio Civil War Reenactors. “More than 50 mounted cavalry, new camp locations, the addition of a central performance area, earthworks, trenches and redoubts, make the 2012 event the most exciting to date.”
For the first time, a Candlelight Tour of Union and Confederate Camps will be available starting at 6 p.m. on Friday. The lantern-lit tour will take visitors through Union and Confederate Camps for a behind-the-scenes look as the men, women and children move-in and prepare for the weekend events, as the Cavalry arrives and as the camps are built.
Reservations are required for the Candlelight Tour Preview, and admission to this special event is $15 for WRHS members or $25 for non-members.
Guests can relive the Civil War experience as re-enactment activities come to life -- from soldier skirmishes and appearances by “President Lincoln” to Civil War era music and a fashion show of Civil War military and civilian dress.
New this year will be an appearance of the soldiers of the 1st Ohio Light Artillery, Battery A. modeled after a Civil War-era Union Army artillery unit. These soldiers will talk about the everyday life of a soldier and fire the Ohio Statehouse Cannons.
At 2 p.m. each day, the recreation of Civil War battles in the North Pasture of Hale Farm will feature roaring cannons and a cavalry charge to emulate the flavor and ambience of the Civil War era.
On Saturday, guests can dance the Virginia reel as they join re-enactors and Hale Farm & Village costumed staff at the Civil War Reenactment Ball, from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Tickets at $5 and reservations are required at 330-666-3711.
Admission to Hale Farm & Village’s Civil War Reenactment is $10 for adults/seniors and $5 for children ages 3-12. WRHS members and children under 3 are admitted free of charge. A Civil War Two-Day Pass is available at $15 for adults; $7.50 for children.
